I lead and play in a little jazz band, the Tie-Dye Quartet. Check the website for music, videos and gig listings - and buy an album, I need money to buy more instruments.
Tie-Dye Heart
I used to run a webcomic, with a couple of cool guys to draw the pictures for me. No updates at the moment, but there's still a hundred or so comics up at tiedyeheart.com
Ina - or Ian MacGillivray to those of you who know me professionally or from back when MC Hammer was top of the charts.
Location
I've just moved to the Isle of Dogs, in London. I'm originally from Cardiff though, and you'll find me kicking around Reading and Birmingham often enough.
Music
I love jazz, playing and listening, though I've played in bands with a range of genres - I also enjoy playing some classical when I can get near a piano. I'll listen to pretty much any genre of music, so long as there's quality and passion involved, and my favourite musician would have to be either Herbie Hancock or Paul Chambers. Favourite composers; Bach, Liszt and Strauss II. Clicky to hear some of my own music as performed by the Tie-Dye Quartet.
Instruments
I play bass (only electric at the moment, but feel free to buy me a double bass, please), and I've got the most gorgeous custom-made fretless left-handed jazz bass. I also play a bit of classical, blues & funk guitar, piano (I've got an SL-880) and I'm learning the trumpet too, bit by bit. If you're especially unlucky, you'll also see me wandering the streets playing one of my many Lee Oskar harmonicas.
My gorgeous trumpet
Geekery
I love coding and general problem solving. I did a bunch of work with .NET stuff and Silverlight whilst at Microsoft, loads of Java at Uni, various other languages elsewhere (Perl, Lisp etc) and I use Notepad++ for pretty much everything. I love AI, game theory and multi-agent systems.
I also enjoy the other stereotypes of geekery, such as a love of symmetry, asymmetry, grammar, recursion, wit, mathematics and logic puzzles. The over-sized television, large surround sound speakers and pile of games consoles should put any doubts that I might be normal to rest.
In other geekery; I founded and ran the Aston Computing Society, which I intend to return to shortly; I started up and run a little webcomic, with some help from people who aren't as utterly devoid of artistic talent as I, Tie-Dye Heart.
Work
I sold my soul to Microsoft in my placement year at Uni, thanks to brainwashing from Will Thompson, and spent the time as a Developer Evangelist at Microsoft's Reading campus. I'm starting the Thomson Reuters Technology Graduate scheme soon.
Gaming
I'm a retro gaming guy generally, so don't be surprised to find me enjoying cannon fodder, sensi soccer, street fighter (I, or possibly II, but nothing later), populous or hydrozone. I also enjoy console gaming - specifically on my XBox 360 recently and I'm completely addicted to Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Which is a good thing, because I'm awesome at them. Seriously.
